Carl: I said from Day One (actually since Nov. 8) that instead of messing around with the likes of county judges and the Katherine Harrises of the world, let's just haul all nine U.S. Supreme Court justices down to Tallahassee, put 'em up in a Red Roof Inn, and settle this thing in a couple of days.

If Rehnquist et al say no, you can't recount the counties, then fine. I can live with it (but that big Bush tax cut better be in the mail to me pronto.) If they say recount just 20 counties, then fine. If they say hand-recount the whole damn state, including the alligators in the Everglades, then fine. I don't care if they go for Gore or Bush.

I just want this election decided by the brightest of the bunch, not by some ex-airline stewardess masquerading as Florida secretary of state and taking orders on the Austin-to-Tallahassee hotline.

Actually, the nation's high court may get this case sooner than we think. What happens if the Florida Supreme Court rules for Gore and the federal court in Atlanta rules for Bush? Then we're at loggerheads, right?
