Hi JDN,

I agree completely. I've tried to read those cards and it's an exercise in futility. Punch cards are so counter-intuitive that they require a machine read-out, especially in large numbers.

You may or may not remember, but in the old days when a reader broke down & there was a deadline pending (e.g. payroll) the payroll employees did NOT try to figure out everyone's pay by re-reading the punchcards. They always went back to paper records (backup plan). Too bad they don't have a some kind of paper backup now in Fla.

All other things being equal, if the counties handling the recounts count all 1million+ of those ballots by hand, I predict a wide percentage variance in any hand-count of punch cards when compared to machine counts.
