This two-year frame agreement includes the supply and installation of Alcatel's state-of-the-art DWDM systems (1) as well as of the new-generation SDH solutions (2) - on fiber and microwave radio - to expand WIND's existing national backbone and for its new international network build-out.The equipment provided on a turn-key basis is part of the Optinex family - Alcatel's breed of leading-edge transmission systems. As part of the contract, Alcatel has already completed the installation and deployment of the first two rings, which serve WIND's customer base in the North and Center of Italy, crossing about 2,300 km. A 220 km repeaterless span was successfully delivered in the Rome-Pian della Speranza link. To integrate the new Optinex DWDM and SDH systems into a complete and powerful platform, Alcatel's network management system deployed in WIND's network will be upgraded. This Alcatel's solution provides continuous and efficient management of the transmission traffic and simplifies the control of the overall network performance. It also integrates end-to-end management of networks based on different technologies and supplied by different vendors. "One of Wind's basic rules is to overcome what is already existing by innovating the guidelines of global communication", said Franco Grimaldi, Chief Technical Officer of WIND. He added, "To keep the pace with technological avant-garde, we need suppliers able to offer future proof solutions, combined with 360 degree assistance and Alcatel can guarantee this remarkable plus-value." "In about two years time, WIND has shown a dizzy growth", stated Jean-Marie Vansteenkiste, President of Alcatel's terrestrial networks activities. "Alcatel's extensive experience in DWDM and SDH technologies allows us to provide WIND with an intelligent, multi-service optical network which will further support WIND's network growth" . The present deal extends the former contract worth about EUR 40 million signed in 1998. (1) Dense Wavelength Division Multiplex (2) Synchronous Digital Hierarchy About WIND TELECOMUNICAZIONI S.p.A. WIND, a recently established telecommunication operator, stems from the joint venture between ENEL and France Telecom. WIND is the only Italian operator able to offer the entire range of telecommunications services based on the combination of fixed, mobile and Internet services. WIND has developed an advanced network infrastructure with dual band mobile (GSM 900, DCS 1800), switching, transmission and ATM data networks. About Optinex The Optinex family of carrier-class transmission solutions is designed with distinctive and enduring features that enable operators to offer a full range of services to business and residential users, including the newest IP-based services with guaranteed IP Quality of Service (QoS). IP and ATM grooming and forwarding functionality is introduced into Optinex Multiservice Nodes and Gateways, thus drastically reducing the amount of investments needed to build up a transmission network and to operate it. The current terrestrial Optinex product range also includes wide-band optical amplifiers and Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing systems (DWDM) with high channel counts and very high performance applications, able to multiplex up to 160 channels - upgradable to 240 - with optical tributaries from 100Mbps to 40Gbps. Within this range, Optinex Optical Network Systems are capable of reaching up to 3.2Tbps of capacity. All the above mentioned systems are managed by a single, fully integrated Network Management System enabling efficient traffic control and routing throughout all network levels, from local up to intercontinental links and from submarine to terrestrial ones. About Alcatel Alcatel builds next generation networks, delivering integrated end-to-end voice and data networking solutions to established and new carriers, as well as enterprises and consumers worldwide. With 120,000 employees and sales of EURO 23 billion in 1999, Alcatel operates in more than 130 countries. Contact press@www.alcatel.com
