How about this for a killer app -- a Tivo/Replay-type PVR combined with a DVD-RW or DVD-RAM. You could initially record everything on the hard drive, whether in real time or via a VOD broadband fast download (assuming that develops), and if you want, record it for posterity on the DVD. The DVD recording mechanism probably isn't fast enough to catch the VOD download, and you may want to watch an episode of X Files to determine whether it's a keeper. Then if you decide to record it, just a couple clicks should do it. An all-in-one temporary and permanent recording device.

Look for the networks and studios to try and kill such a device though, it cuts into their profit potential too much. Has anyone thought of this yet? (yeah, I know, if I would read every post, I would have seen it 6 months ago). Just seemed like a cool idea, once the recordable DVD format war ends and prices come down.
