Actually, if what you care about is the justices, you really shouldn't care all that much.
Republican nominees have rarely shown much in the way of strict conservative leanings.
Of all the Republican nominees in the last 20 years, only 2 have been consistently hard line, while 3 have shown considerable moderation. There are currently 7 members that are Republican nominees in what is a BARELY right-tinged court.
By almost every objective criteria, this court is among the most moderate in quite some time DESPITE the overwhelming number of Republican nominees.
It is Republicans that have much to worry about. Democratic nominees have rarely shown much in the way of backing off from their partisan positions.

The single major reason for NOT wanting a Republican nominee on the court is the abortion debate. Yet the Republicans have 7 justices, and they still can't overturn it.

Michael,
The Supreme Court Judges have to be confirmed by Congress. So the President is not free to appoint Judges freely. That is a scare plank in the political platform. Besides, most judges who are politically motivated wait until their party is in office to retire. I do not believe they have a set retirement age. If Gore is elected, they wait out his term. If Bush is elected, they wait out his term. So you are not going to change any future Supreme Court rulings.

Michael,
I'm working on my sense of humor at this point. I received the following email. Yes it was really sent by a Florida resident.<g>

From a resident of the state of Florida:

We, the people of Florida, are holding this election hostage. When you
promise to stop sending us your old people, we will release your election.

PS: Florida will now be spelled Flori-DAH because so many people
there are too dumb to vote.

Stocks of Personal Computer Makers Fall on Downgrades

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks of personal computer makers fell
on Monday after Wit Soundview cut its ratings on Dell Computer
Corp. (NasdaqNM:DELL - news), Gateway Inc. (NYSE:GTW -
news) and Apple Computer Inc. (NasdaqNM:AAPL - news) and
on chip maker Intel Corp. (NasdaqNM:INTC - news).

Analyst Mark Specker said the downgrades were based on weak
demand uncovered in calls to dozens of computer stores across
the country.

``Most of those who are closest to the consumer right now said
(PC sales) were running at least 10 percent below their
expectations,'' he said. ``That caused us to pull our ratings on
Dell and Apple.

``For Gateway, the demand climate around them is weak, but
then there are also some balance-sheet concerns.''

Specker said another reason for the Dell downgrade was to
make a distinction between Dell and Compaq Computer Corp.
(NYSE:CPQ - news). He said Wit Soundview's surveys had
found that Compaq was favored by customers in the market for
more powerful business computers, which PC makers are
expanding into as PC sales growth slows.
