Gore wins over public with pre-emptive strike:
From Washington Post

"Gore said he believed the hand count he wants could be finished within seven days of its start. Whether that is true or not, it likely seems reasonable to most Americans. The latest major opinion poll, by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal, found 55 percent of those surveyed said they favor a recount of the ballots, even if it takes several weeks, while 41 percent said they prefer to stop the recount and the court cases and declare a winner now.

Some Republicans have criticized Bush's strategists for thinking the public would support their efforts to force an early verdict."

The GOP strategy to push for an end to this on Saturday has already failed whether they realize it or not. Harris may certify the votes but her motives are so partisan they will be met with widespread cynicism and be overturned quickly by the courts.

And you are so right about GOP desperation. How can a party take
so much abuse? How many more times will the GOP be able to pick itself up and dust
itself off? That's impeachment (GOP disaster), Elian (GOP disaster) and now Florida.
All I can say is that party can sure take some damage!

You are obviously not seeing the polls that were on TV today. The people polled in Florida want the election count done and a resolution. The poll was negative toward Gore's actions.

surprised if Bush could sink so low
It's not up to Bush, His handlers have invested 200 million dollars to get him this far, and perhaps another 50 million in legal fees. They call the shots now. They may think that Junior George doesn't have 4 years of shelf-life in him, so it's now or never.

Exactly "what bickering" are you talking about? The Law? Personally, I wish Bush AND Gore would ask for a total RECOUNT of the entire country......Plus all the "Missing Ballots" that might now be turning up.
