Bush to be president and overwhelmingly oppose allowing hand recounts in four Democrat-dominated Florida counties to determine the next president, a massive Internet poll reveals. By a margin of 51 percent to 40 percent, respondents to a Harris Interactive poll thought Bush should be president. By 52 percent to 32 percent, they believe that Bush will be elected president "if the votes are counted perfectly accurately and honestly in Florida," Harris Interactive said today. Independents sided with Republicans in supported Bush, while Democrats still favored Gore. The online Harris Poll of more than 100,000 Americans was completed Tuesday. "There was no support at all for simply counting four counties in Florida and letting that recount be the basis for deciding who wins Florida and, in fact, the presidency," said Gordon Black, Harris Interactive's chairman and chief executive officer, referring to Democrat-dominated Volusia, Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade. The poll found that: Gore is losing more support than Bush. If Gore is declared the winner in Florida, only 42 percent of U.S. voters will believe that the results have been arrived at fairly. By contrast, 56 percent of the voters will believe that the results have been fairly arrived at if Bush wins the Florida election. Forty percent did not approve of the way Republican Bush has handled the situation; 49 percent did not approve of Democrat Vice President Al Gore's approach. Only 6 percent of those surveyed supported a hand count in the four counties. About three in 10 would hand count the entire state, and four in 10 oppose any hand counting. Six out of 10 voters do not want any revote. Sixteen percent would support a revote in Palm Beach County, and 16 percent would support a statewide revote. By a margin of 47 to 34, voters would prefer a revote nationwide rather than only in Palm Beach County. The study was conducted entirely using the Internet between Nov. 11 and 14 with a sample of more than 117,000 actual voters from the Harris Interactive panel of online respondents. Party affiliation was: Democrats, 37 percent; Republicans, 36 percent; and Independent/Other at 27 percent.
