Michael,

Lucent smells like burnt toast. They can't seem to pull it together, and with this fast moving technology, they are falling further behind. Loss of key personnel doesn't help.

Nortel is awesome, but it is also burdened by a huge operation that contains massive inertia. Hard to turn, accelerate, or stop. That legacy equipment biz will soon become a big drag.

As time moves on the RBOC's will gravitate toward Ciena's best-of-breed technology and forego the good old boy ways of the past. Ciena is sitting up there in the cat bird seat.

Jack

>>One thing in this direction would one or more major wins in the RBOC space, NT's (and Lu's) traditional hunting ground.<<

I have no idea if Ciena will be announcing a contract with a RBOC, but it sure sounds like Ciena is working closely with the RBOCs. Steve Chaddick (Senior Vice President
Systems & Technology, of Ciena) made a few interesting comments about the problems inherent in the structure of a RBOC when presenting products for both service and bandwidth provisioning. Here is the link-the whole FO discussion is well worth the time spent listening .....
