Selectric II,

Obviously projecting Gore as the winner in Florida was premature based on the count, recount & re-recount. It was obviously inappropriate to project Gore the winner in Florida while the polls were still open in Florida. Heck, even today Florida is still is too close to call with uncounted absentee ballots outstanding.

IF it turns out that the media systematically projected victory in states for Gore with a lower margin of votes in the lead, while there were Bush states with a larger margin of votes in the lead & the media held back from projecting victory for Bush, then there may well be a serious problem.

However, to determine, even via statistically valid means, that a certain number of Republicans would have voted for Bush is inappropriate & should not affect the outcome of this election. It was each person's personal decision to forego the right the vote for whatever reason. There is no legitimate way to divine who or how many Republicans would have actually voted for Bush if the media had presented election results in an unbiased manner.

An attempt to do alter this election would pry Pandora's box wide open. IMVHO, this problem should be addressed & an acceptable solution should be in place for the next election to assure this never happens again.

IMVHO, it is no different than attempting to divine the intent of a voter who, after considerable, solemn thought, left hanging chad, pregnant chad, dimpled chad or any form of chad attached to their ballot. Same goes for multiple votes for president. And butterfly ballots too. These people lost their right to vote by not personally assuring they properly selected their personal choice for president on their their own ballot, for whatever reason.

Think of the problems that would ensue if you tried to correct these real & perceived problems in order to affect this election. In essence, one set of people would determine the voting intent of thousands of other individuals who failed to properly vote on their own.

It would be tragic to have multiple standards applied to divine the voters intent. How could you possibly divine a voters intent differently in any number of ways in different counties & give absolute assurance the intent of these inappropriately completed ballots had been accurately divined? Since the ballots are designed to have the chad fall out without a minimum of effort, over handling of the ballots could cause chad to be dislodged. Florida ran every ballot through a machine counter at least twice. Select democratic strongholds have had massive handling in the attempt to divine the voters intent. Since the standards to divine a voters intent changed multiple times, some ballots were handled a massive number of times. There's chad on the floor for in these divining rooms. Who's vote did that chad represent? How did it get there?

How can those good people from Florida assure the people of the USA that they achieved an accurate manual count under these circumstances? Now consider that there will be a manual recount only in democratic strongholds where statistically, it is highly probable that there will be a disproportionate number of Gore votes created. These votes will be included with the rest of the state that was machine counted & did not get to have any extra divined votes counted. From a statistical standpoint, this whole mess is fraught with problems relating to statistical validity & accuracy. Should it be allowed to proceed?

Pandora's box would be pried wide open. IMVHO this problem should be addressed & an acceptable solution should be in place for the next election to assure this never happens again.

OOF :-| Too late on the latter one.

Perhaps the laws of the state of Florida will prevail & the next president of the United States of America will not be divined from chad.
