I don't think the popular vote is necessarily meaningful since in states where one candidate was considered to be a shoe in, many pro or con voters may not have gone to vote.

Actually the turnout was suppressed on the West Coast where Gore was the strongest. Suppressed turnout probably hurt Gore especially because of the Nader factor. Without Nader, Gore's popular vote margin would have been bigger but it doesn't matter. I have resigned myself to Bush winning. I wish him well. It will be difficult.
