I think that the issue may be that the panhandle is in a different time zone, so that the polls would remain open another hour.

Polling places spike..they spike at opening and at closing....so many votes could certainly have been llost to those giving up.

I don't buy the panhandle argument.
You don't realize that Republicans don't vote for congress or their state legislature or their local officials. Once Gore was proclaimed a winner they had nothing to do but go home, clap off the light, and sleep.
