Subject: The Game Isn't Over

On November 12, 2000, the Indianapolis Colts beat the New York Jets 23-15.
Imagine this post-game discussion (with apologies to the Jets, a fine
organization whose statistics from that game provide a convenient basis for
this scenario):

COLTS
Good game.

JETS
Good game. But the game isn't over.

COLTS
Um, yes, it is. We won.

JETS
We say you didn't. We do not accept what the scoreboard says. We had more
passing yards, 271 for us to a mere 210 for you.

COLTS
So you did. But we had more points at the end.

JETS
We even had more total yards, 367 to your paltry 358.

COLTS
True. You beat us there, too. But we had more points at the end.

JETS
You're trying to steal the game. You're manipulating the system. This
doesn't reflect the will of the fans. New York is a more populous state, so
clearly there are more Jets fans than Colts fans. The victory belongs to us.

COLTS
But we had more points at the end.

JETS
We're not sure what you're afraid of and why you won't get back on the
field.

COLTS
Well, the game's over, the fans have left, and we had more points at the
end. We won.

JETS
Your so-called "victory" means nothing. There were some calls we didn't
like.

COLTS
No doubt. Happens every game. There were some calls we didn't like, either.
But the officials make their calls and we all have to live with it.

JETS
We want every play reviewed and we want the option to reverse every call
that went against us.

COLTS
But the game's over. The rules say that the winner is the one with the most
points at the end. We're trying to focus on the next game, not re-hash this
one forever.

JETS
Did we mention that we had more yards passing and more total yards? Did we
mention that we have more fans than you? Chalk up the win for us, and we'll
let the matter go.

COLTS
This is the NFL. The games are played by rules. It seems you don't like the
rules.

JETS
We don't recognize the authority of the NFL in this matter. In fact, there
is no controlling legal authority in this matter, period.

COLTS
This game would not have existed without the NFL, so it's hard to understand
how there is no authority involved here. Are you saying that the rules you
don't like don't apply to you? You determine your own victories? Sounds like
something worthy of a third-world dictator.

JETS
The issue not the Jets winning or the Colts winning. We're talking about
right and wrong and fairness and the will of the majority.

COLTS
Ah. So this is not about who won, but about the process. Then, if you had
won, you would still insist on every play being reviewed, correct? Even if
it meant a reversal of your victory?

JETS
That's irrelevant.

COLTS
Oh really. We noticed you didn't protest any games you won this year. And if
you had had more points at the end instead of us, would you still be
questioning the authority of the NFL to declare the winner?

JETS
You're trying to confuse the fans.

COLTS
You knew the rules going in and you agreed to them. You knew - and even
publicly discussed - the possibility that WE might have more passing yards
and more total yards, yet YOU could still win the game. In fact, you seemed
to relish the idea. So if you weren't opposed to that possibility before the
game, why are you coming out now and saying it's wrong? Apparently the
system is OK until you lose.

JETS
There were several calls we didn't like and those cost us the game.

COLTS
We're pretty sure that has happened to us in other games. But you knew going
in that calls by officials sometimes go in your favor and sometimes go
against you. That was fine with you before the game, but when we came out
with more points at the end, you suddenly didn't like the system.

JETS
You're really intent on stealing this game, aren't you? So you had a couple
of more points than us at the end of regulation. Big deal. We remind you
again: we had 367 total yards to the pathetic 358 total yards you managed.
We say the rules need to be changed so that the team with the most fans and
the most total yards wins, starting with the game we just finished.

COLTS
You are welcome to try and change the rules for the future. But it's a bit
disingenuous to try to change the rules after the game is over and apply
them retroactively, especially when you agreed to those same rules before
the game.

JETS
We'll see you in court.

- end

SCUMbria - Re: "The higher maximum junction temperature indicates that the parts test at a higher temperature, which is a sign of extra margin. "

The higher maximum junction temperatures indicate that the ThumperBurn burns more heat than can conventionally be removed from the IC package - leading to excessive junction temperatures.

The device does operate at those temperatures - no argument there.

Now - on Monday, you will have your own new spin on the Pentium 4 clock speed and power dissipation and junction temperature issue - where what was good and great for AMD will be just the opposite for Intel.

We all look forward to your treatise on what "is" is.
