That site (garden.com) reminds me of a question that's been bugging me. I like to garden, and I deal with several nurseries that have nice websites. I've surfed the garden.com website before, since it shows up on search engines. But the real nurseries have better prices and better inventory. So there's no advantage to using garden.com. What were they thinking? And what were the venture capitalists thinking? And what were the investors thinking?

At least with amazon.com, they've got a huge inventory and the prices are better, and even so their survival is questionable.

In the meantime, the real nurseries are probably far better off now that they can put their catalogues on the web. I deal with people I never would have heard of, some really neat things, too. Like applesource.com. You can order a box of apples, picking from 75 different varieties. I found them on the net, and the guy that runs the place is a pleasure to deal with.

applesource.com

My thought is that we've learned nothing new, no matter how brightly you package BS it's still BS. A good business model can be enhanced by the net, but you can't create one using the net.
