The impeachment fix. The genocidal aggression in Kosovo. The possible stolen election of 2000.

After World War II and the various war crimes trials it was popular to engage in debates about whether or not "it can happen here". The irony of that debate at the time was that "it" was certainly happening in spades in many and large parts of the world without universal recognition among the debaters.

But we can nevertheless learn from that valuable debate. My own conclusion is that "it" can happen only when a people stop being diligent of the fact that power conferred is dangerous, that "it" must be preceded by a perversion of a nation's basic ideals, and that a general apathy is a requirement of that perversion.

Once power is seized through illegal means, "it" is already upon us. Those who fight the good fight against that seizure are remembered as legitimate heros. Usually posthumously...
