Good way to polarize people and raise the hate level, eh? I have been trying to be apolitical now as the vote is done. I don't like at all what is going on in FL, but I can imagine not many do. We all need to be careful not to paint with the broad brush because not many fit into those molds.

I mean I am a hunter, fisherman, steward of my land for the good of the animals and tree's. I consider myself an environmentalist and take part in our Resource Board meetings every spring for the WI DNR. While it might seem strange to some that I am a Republican from my experience at resource meetings I think it is probably almost a split.

I, too, have seen these statistics, along with percentages for Hispanics, age groups, etc. I am sure the Dems and Reps are paying attention to their vote base and assessing the absentee ballots accordingly. Stating of voting percentages is unending in the media.

I don't read the Porch or the Idea threads so I'm not taking sides on opinions voiced there; but I do know that allowing people to "sound off" is an excellent diffuser of more pronounced aggression. Being PC just drives folks underground into an environment where they will hear only those with like opinions. Here on SI we are constantly exposed to the larger world. Like democracy, that isn't comfortable; but it keeps us from staring at our own navels.

Peace.

Poet,

I absolutely agree with you that some of the political thought on SI, on both sides really but particularly on the conservative side, is scary and homogenous. I believe that most SI members, even those who are conservative politically, are not like that. I wrote as I did last night because I felt that the statement was being made (at least implied, but I read it as more overt than that) that ALL of the Bush supporters are alike and all have motives that are not deserving of respect.

Frankly, that set off a whole bunch of buttons for me all at once. I tried to be civil in my anger, to attack the substance of what was being said rather than the person saying it. That is a fine line to draw sometimes. Going back and rereading what I said, I don't think I crossed that line though I may have come close.

One of the reasons I created this thread is so that people would feel free to speak their minds regardless of PC-ness or offending somebody. Sort of an argument room off to the side, to have it out about this political situation and then agree not to let it linger.

I have respect for you and your posts, which I have read over a long period of time. I therefore believe what you say about your friend, and hope that he was not offended. And I hope that both of you feel free to stick around and share and express your views here.

Regards,

OMD
