Hi James,

I don't have specifics, however, re:

"How many TV’s are sold in the US per year?"

I'd say a boatload..I also think this number will jump sharply when broadcasters start transmitting digital signals...IMO, the adoption to digital TV will rival increases years ago when folks dumped their old B&W TV's for colour TV's. Look no farther than the rapid adoption of DVD players as evidence of pent up demand for digital TV, especially when 99.9% of today's TV's (minus audio output) aren't equipped to handle digital signals.

Re: "TV’s that don’t have the digital functionality built in can be upgraded via a STB. How big is that market ?"

I think this market will initially be larger than DTV's because DTV's will still command a hefty premium over regular TV's. There will be a period when Joe America will opt to upgrade their current TV's with a STB to receive digital signals...until the price of DTV's inevitably falls to levels that will ensure mass adoption.

WIND's recent deal with Motorola covers all bases however, WIND will profit whether Motorola sells their chip set to DTV manufacturers or STB manufacturers.

Again, I think this is a killer app for WIND and will eventually qualify as yalp.

Regards,

Rinks

TV and STB sales in U.S.

James, I took this from Gemstar's 10K filed 3/31/00

>>According to the Electronic Industry Association, in 1999 consumer portable and table color television sales in the U.S. were approximately 23.2 million units. The Company estimates that the number of hardware platforms shipped annually which are suitable for incorporating the Gemstar Guide Technology may be as many as 60 million or more, and include televisions (28.9 million units per year in the U.S., including TV-VCR combination units), VCRs (22.8 million units per year in the U.S.), set-top cable boxes (8.8 million units per year in the U.S.), integrated satellite receivers and decoders (5.5 million per year in the U.S.) and tuner-equipped personal computers.<<

I'll see if I can find some market share data for each TV and STB mfgr.

Hope this helps,
Jeff
