I would like to respond to your postin public forum
>>No one can stand beside
them and help guide their weak, arthritic hands in their efforts. Please have a little compassion for these people. You too
will stand there alone someday in front of some voting machine, your hand shaking, your vision impaired, and burning
with the desire to make your vote count and you will have as much a right to do so as the most athletic 21-year-old.

3Putt...take a few moments to put yourself in the other person's shoes... it's the heart of the Golden Rule...out

Where does a persons age or disiabilty negate their responsibility to properly perform a task before them?
First , there will not be a voting system in Florida or other states that use the punch card system by the next Prez election, I think I can safely speak for most everyone that by the next election, there will be touch screens or some method that will make it much easier for voters to make their choices correctly.
Having said that, there is a time, even though you have the right to vote, that if you cannot do the task of punching the right hole, you should not be voting, it is unfair to people who can make their choices.
The repeated hand recounts are human biased. Example, on Inside Edition last night they interviewed a new volunteer that was going to be counting ballots today. She told the reporter and the world, the reason she was there was "shse was sure she could come up with more votes for Gore".
Another example, we in Florida can have the priviledge of driving an automobile, by meeting financial requirements, and passing a simple vision test when our license comes up for renewal, no reaction test or other skills required.
That does not negate our responsibility to realize that we may pose a serious threat to others, and it is eveident here in FL by the number of eldely drivers that run into daycare centers, homes and businesses each year. Many times it takes injury or death before they have their license revoked.
As for myself, I like to scuba dive and have done so for many years, however through realizing recently that my body doesn't respond properly anymore to the forces of pressure anymore I only snorkle now, because I have a resposibility to others that I do not endager them.
Be old, disabeled, or handicapped in any way does not make it ok to to irresonsibly perform a task.

3_putt: At least, I shall have the common senses to ask for help, if I shall be a senior citizen and have the need.

Compassion yes, follow voting instructions and obey election laws (no double punches on ballots) definitely too! Let's consider a hypothetic example. A senior of poor vision in West Palm beach accidently runs through a red traffic light and results in a fatal accident. Because of his/her poor vision and someone's "compassion", he should get away from the legal punishment that he/she causes?

By the way, one of the West Palm beach voters who filed law suit about the butterfly ballots is a physical therapist about 45 yrs old. Do you tell me that he has physical or mental problems?
