<doug: Do you have any evidence to back up this claim? >

Any time I have hard evidence or links to back up my seemingly outrageous claims, you can be sure that I provide them.

In this case, I am quite simply referring to polls conducted at various popular gaming sites (as non-partisan as they come), asking readers what CPU is in their computer. I then proceeded to generalize this to the entire gaming population. This is clearly not scientific ;)

Specifically, the AMD > 50% poll was on a popular "EverQuest" site. For those who don't know, EverQuest is a rather popular fantasy on-line "massively multiplayer" role playing game (MMORPG, IIRC). It originally shipped just over a year and a half ago. I have seen polls on other gaming sites, where the AMD processors scored almost as high. The EQ one struck me, in that it had a large number of entries and that it was "spam proof" (IP-based).

I realize that EQ might not be the best choice, since it has a very broad appeal as games go (quite a lot of female players as well, compared to other games). In the end, the point I was trying to make was simply that gamers typically buy fairly low-end systems. Believe it or not, but power gamers willing to shell out the cash for a GeForce2 don't comprise a large portion of the people actually buying games. For this reason, Quake2 had to run WELL on ATI Rage boards, since it was by far the most popular 3D chip at the time (although certainly not anything near the best).
