Vernon Reid, John Scofield

Antone's, Thursday 16 & Friday 17

To balance out our emerging big-city traffic, rent, and crime, a night of big-city improv from Vernon Reid and John Scofield serves as a taste of New York's Lower East Side jazz scene here at Austin's li'l ol' home of the blues. Both guitarists are bringing quartets, Scofield's outfit primarily focused on re-creating the experimental funk raunch of his recent Bump CD, while Living Colour founder Reid's avant-garde Masque project features a turntablist/clarinetist, and reportedly jumps between mellow, free-form jazz, psychedelic rock, and a healthy helping of blues and traditional jazz covers from Lee Morgan to Thelonius Monk. Forget the Subway Series, this is the city's best doubleheader offering of the year.
