Myron, did your friend use the 'rescue CD' which comes with most computers now to get your machine running again?
How did you get MS Word previously? Was it on the PC when you bought it? Is there a MS Word CD?

I ask because I had a pc where MS Word was on the 'rescue CD' but didn't automatically get reinstalled after doing a restore. Is your pc a Compaq? they have a unique way of doing things.

Gottfried

hi myron

gottfried has you going on the right track. ms word probably needs to be re-installed. having just put it on a new operating system myself (from the cd supplied with the pc manufacturer, dell), i see that it doesn't always leap out at you like you would think it might. and it appears to reside in a folder called microsoft office on the windows explorer directory tree. it is found easily, though, by clicking start, programs, ms word.

just to be extra sure it's not still on your pc, why not use file manager to search for some word docs that you remember the title of? heck, the whole program may even be in your recycle bin waiting to be recovered. not real likely, but stranger things have happened.

hope you find it or get the new program installed.

good luck

:)

Let's hope that just the shortcut disappeared and not the whole application. Use Find and look for WINWORD.EXE, and if you find it, click it, and with any luck, Word will open. If you don't find WINWORD.EXE, you may need to re-install it from CD.

If you must install from CD, be sure to have your Product ID, that multi-digit code required for installation. If you can't find it, check your registry. The key is:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Word for Windows\97.1.00819(1033)\Registration]
"ProductID"="999999-OEM-9999999-99999"
"ProductName"="Microsoft Word for Windows"

If you find it, copy it down. (I've changed my ID to all nines, and edited out some sub-keys for simplicity.)

Hope this helps, PW.
