But that elector, and the candidate he/she supports, would forever be tied to the word "payola".

Just like Gore's supporters, given their voting skills, have been linked to the word Crayola.

Careful, careful...payola would have to be proven.

Actually(and I honestly don't want to ruin your day but you should consider this), there is something more intriguing here than "payola". One thing that the recent "Survivor" and "Big Brother" reality based programs has shown is that FAME, without up front money, can lead directly to wealth. Even the losers, the EARLY losers, on those shows have gotten screen tests, Playboy photo shoots, guest spots on talk shows, and so on.

Moreover, what better alibi to those who would accuse them of getting paid off. No money changes hands between the political hacks and the electors, outside third parties in the entertainment media would court them and pay them for their appearance. There would never be a money trail between them and the Dems, nor would there need be.

Believe me, those three electors(if they exist) will become three of the most famous people in the world. And for some, fame is incredibly intoxicating, especially when money is on the horizon.

I'll agree with you that most of the time it is about money, except for those times when you might get caught, were it only about the money.
