Joshua, Oh, yeah, it was very serious that you never break character. That was back when it was ruled by athletic commissions and before it became sports entertainment. In fact, if you remember the infamous ABC story on the WWF, where Dr. D David Schultz clobbered obnoxious John Strossel, it was over him saying that wrestling was "fake." 270 pound, without fat, Dr. D kept yelling, "does that feel fake?" as he cuffed the 145 pound newscasting monster about the ears. Also, Hulk Hogan power drove the even more obnoxious comedian who was later a detective on "Homicide," can't remember his name right now, over taunting him that the moves don't hurt. Hulk lost more than $400,000 in a lawsuit proving that they can smart a bit. <g>

But, there have always been guys who are "stiff." In other words, they thought it was more realistic if they actually hurt you. Kevin Sullivan, The Steiner Brothers and Leon White (Big Van Vader) come to mind right away. The only one I ever met was Kevin, and he never did anything to me. I would have paid to see Mr. Wonderful knock out Vader twice for real when he fired him from WCW.

Also, Hulk Hogan himself had his foot broken, on purpose, by his teacher at wrestling school. Taught him a lesson, I suppose. Sort of like Catholic School. <g>
