President Reagan did approve of clear cutting in the National Forests of Washington and Oregon. As a result of the policies of the Forest Service under Reagan, we had a substantial increase in clear cuts. You can still see them while driving over Snoqualmie Pass or Stevens Pass or while hiking in the Cascades. People in this part of the country are very aware of the Republican clear cutters and therefore
tend to vote for Democrats. It is one of the reasons why Washington has 6 Democratic congressional reps and only 3 Republicans.
