Looking at it from a user perspective, when do you think it will be available commercially, on a nationwide basis?

For those who dont follow the unmoderated Qualcomm thread....here are some excerpts from the PCS analyst meeting which was held on November 3rd.

Message 14727754

They plan on moving to 1xrtt during 2001, 1XEV-DO (HDR 2.4Mbps) during 2002, and 1XEV-DV (3-5Mbps) during 2003.

- The 1x roll-out will begin during 2001 and be completed during the 2Q '02. They expect to spend about $800m on the roll-out with half of that money coming next year.

- Capacity improvements are going to be huge. Using the current IS-95A capacity as a baseline of 1.

IS-95A 1
EVRC ~1.4x
1xrtt 3x
Smart Antennas 5.8x
Selectable Rate Vocoder 8x

PCS seems to be moving fairly aggresively towards the next generation standards. My impression from the meeting was that they understood the need for applications to drive the higher data speeds. My guess as to why they are not rolling out 1x handsets is that PCS is still trialing 1x. The SK roll-out (though commercial) is still sort of a test...it is probably likely that PCS is watching closely, but is unwilling to take any risks that might be associated with being a first-mover in 1x.
