RE:"Eliminate the electoral college. (there are good arguments on both sides of this debate)"

Easier said than done, first you need 2/3s of the House and the Senate. Then you need 3/4ths of the states to ratify it...
The latter will not be easy since small states wouldn't want to give up the little power they have...

As for the hate, IMHO, Gore chose to magnify it during the campaign and after the campaign. A lot of people don't appreciate seeing Lawyers decide their vote...
The military didn't like Gore, now they like him a whole lot less...

John,

- Eliminate the electoral college. (there are good arguments on both sides of this debate)

One good thing about the electoral college is that the disputes are localized. Even if we do have a battle of recounts that widens to IA, WI, NM, OR, NH, it's still a lot less than than having this mess in the entire country.

This of course doesn't address the merit of the EC, only a logistical advantage it brings.
