One April night in '92, in the Sun pub in Coniston, Lake District, Cumbria, i was prohibited from paying for beer after reciting a couple of verses of this to a group of contemporary tommies, one of whom was a welsh woman of twenty-five who had picked me up hitchhiking, she had been a serjeant in the british army and was on her way to the pub to meet with friends currently in it and their main topic of conversation was grousing about the way in which their government treated them ... several of the others were in an Outward Bound programme trying to reform juvenile deliquents and their budget was being cut irrationally, apparently ... their concerns sounded like yours and Kipling's, although lacking any connotation of aggressive foreign policy ... anyway it impressed them that a hyphenated colonial boy would know -

Then it's Tommy this an' Tommy that an' "Tommy 'ow's your soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll
