As a result of the infamous telemarketing campaign, the Nation has been made aware that there was some confusion apparently created by the nearness of the Gore hole and the Buchanan hole. I would submit that common sense would suggest that this kind of confusion may well have led many people to quit their hole punching, mid-stride as it were, as their inner mind suddenly grasped that they might be punching the wrong chad.

It is this parking lot avowal of confusion which leads me to consider that, trying to determine voter intent--especially in this particular set of circumstances--is a rather arrogant example of Big Brother. If the voters admit they were confused, then who is anyone, to come after the fact, and determine their confused intent?

We have seen how extremely difficult it is to simply count votes actually made. Trying to count votes that people might have made (rather for Gore, Bush, or anyone else) suggests a smugness that I find unsettling.

As I said in a previous post, I think a system of typing the candidate code or name into a keyboard along with your voter refence number, appropriate storage back-up, and a scrambling program to protect voter anonymity...is ultimately the answer to this confusion. In the meantime, for all those partisans out there: It is probably time to start hoping and praying for the other guy to win. The media is going to milk these partisan hostilities for the next four years, which means the President and advisors will be tempted to create some huge International success in order to remove these barriers at home. I don't like it.

Canada is having an election on Nov. 27. Chances are it will be very close as well. Canadians will be happy to have the benefit of the mistakes made in this campaign. Hopefully, they will be able to organize their dirty tricks, lies, and scams in a more sophisticated manner than this: A manner that does not create all this divisiveness...
