One major problem of focus and understanding is that 3G seems to be discussed in the context of GSM land. Therefore the stories about slow and expensive roll out.

You know, I see the same thing. GSM has the mindshare and everything else is either thought of in terms of it or not thought of seriously at all. This is much like Windows AD and Novell's NDS. While there are people who understand NDS and its capabilities, they are largely ignored by the press and everything is thought of from a Windows perspective.

The GSM PR machine is extremely strong and will fight tooth and nail for every last person's mental framework. Q certainly has an uphill battle on its hands. After all, GSM vendors have managed to convince thousands who should know better that W-CDMA is evolving from GSM. If they can do that they can do almost anything.

Since in the end every GSM system has agreed to adopt some flavor of CDMA, I'm content at a minimum to win the money wars.

It is still amazing to see the number of stories that DoCoMo will be "first" with 3G next May while the path for KDDI for 1x and 1xEV is rarely mentioned.

Chaz, although the technology war is probably over, the problem of rolling out new applications that make the new technology functionally superior to the old remains. KDDI's plight is a case in point.

It's possible that new applications that are predicated on 3g's bandwidth advantages will await the roll out of WCDMA, and kluged together "fun apps" that work on GSM will hold sway for the near term.

Timing is everything and I think that the GSM camp have effectively delayed the arrival of 3G dependant apps simply by creating a mind set that 3G won't be here for awhile. There is a certain inherent power in owning 80% of the world market.

Chaz,

<< in Asia the beginnings of 3G are on their way seems to be misunderstood. It is still amazing to see the number of stories that DoCoMo will be "first" with 3G next May while the path for KDDI for 1x and 1xEV is rarely mentioned >>

Reason for this is that Japan (like Korea) has spectrum set aside for 3G in the 2GHz band.

In Japan (not sure about Korea), just like Europe, there are also caps on data transmission speeds in existing spectrum. These could and may be waved for certain chunks of spectrum and even for certain technologies within that spectrum.

DoCoMo will be first in 3G spectrum but only with a small scale commercial trial.

Both KDDI and DoCoMo have scheduled full scale (albeit limited for DoCoMo) commercial launches late next fall. Difference being DoCoMo will be in 3G spectrum and KDDI's will not (and could be capped at 128 kbps. KDDI will not launch in 3G spectrum till late 2002 and will consequently not get as much attention.

DoCoMo (and possibly KDDI) may launch 3G type services in existing spectrum using PHS and PDC.
