Is that your prediction? My prediction is that b the time the Florida S.Ct. issues a decision we will know whether Gore will make up enough ground in the recounts to defeat Bush. Then public opinion will demand Bush concede. Thus the GOP's lame attempts to smear the recounts as partisan, corrupt and biased. It's their last hope, but it's not a very big hook to hang your hat on. That's why it's so funny.

Florida Vote Counting Double Standard:

If it’s an overseas absentee ballot (more likely Republican), count it only if we can tell beyond any doubt that it was mailed on time, filled out precisely as required, etc. In other words, any error on the part of the voter or the U.S. Post Office results in the vote not being counted.

If it’s a ballot being hand recounted (more likely Democrat), count it if there appears to be any possibility that the voter might have intended to cast a vote for president (pregnant chad, for example). In other words, errors on the part of the voter, or vote counter speculations that an error may have occurred, result in the vote being counted.

Here’s the emerging equation:

Given a ballot where there is some doubt about whether or not the proper voting procedure was followed:

1. if it’s an overseas absentee ballot, DON’T COUNT the vote (i.e., the voter’s intention, the will of this particular person, is secondary to procedure);

2. if it’s a hand recount ballot in one of the heavily Democratic counties, COUNT the vote (i.e., the voter’s intention, the will of this particular person, takes precedence over procedure).

Gore campaign spokesman Doug Hattaway tells us "everyone ought to be comfortable with the outcome" of this process.

Oh. Thanks for thinking for me, Doug.
