VERIZON WIRELESS is also evaluating 3g-1xEV or IS186 "CDMA HDR" according to the executive director for network planning.Carriers are excited about the added high performance options that could be added to existing 1.25 megahertz channels and is compatiable with current networks. The carriers can selectively deploy HDR and migrate it at a controlled pace and cost according to what the market is demanding.Carriers like this sort of transition and QUALCOMM now has both the newly published TIA specification of IS186 technology and a MARKET!This will cause shuttters to rattle in Finland and else where in Europe as the killer application becomes apparent bring Nokia to there knees begging for a chip deal.

Sadly, this excerpt from your SSB quote (thanks BTW) would seem to validate the Comdex Tech's statements.

Management anticipates quantities of commercial handsets to be available beginning in 3Q/01 and intends to seed the market similar to the way it deployed Wireless Web. Full national 1X is planned for 2Q/02 with selective deployments beginning in the third quarter.

They don't plan to sell 1x handsets until after they start implementing 1x. I don't get it.

BTW, in reference to another snippet from the SSB writeup

Regardless of what we call 1X, the upgrade will double voice capacity for the company and provide a shared 144 kbps channel for its customers with advertised end-user speeds of around 70 kbps.

I asked about the performance of existing 1x in Korea, and wanted to know specifically what throughput a typical user would get, irrespective of the quoted 144 kbps rate. I was told 64 kbps, in good agreement with the SSB number.
