Perhaps a more accurate description of what I observed is that price would rise slowly on lower volume and at certain threshold levels it appeared that a quantum increase in supply was made available such that the price declined.

I attribute such behavior to the activity of larger sellers since I assume that the price elasticity of a large number of sellers would tend to be smoother.
