Pearly, that may be the nub of it...plain working folks in a steady environment. But with a difference. those same people, or their ancestors have been right there in that same place for hundreds, often thousands of years. Village life and all that goes with it, the rich fabric of customs, superstitions, folklore and an unquestioning belief that that IS is more important than oneself, and that all that IS is unchanging, eternal. It makes for a powerful safety net, much better than foodstamps, ect. We can't have that here though. We were sundered from all that when our ancestors left Europe and ever since and increasingly as time passes stirred around like beans in a stew. WSR
