Skeets,

As the old saying goes, "Politics ain't beanbag", and both sides are playing for keeps.

But I do resent the Republican's willingness to delegitimize manual recounts, when they are a normal part of the electoral process. That's poisoning the well.

I can well understand how the sight of Bill Daley around the hand counts sends them ballistic. But the correct answer is to insist on more impartial observers, not to claim that manual recounts are illegitimate. I have heard many allegations of Democratic wrong-doing, some bordering on the hysterical, but not a shred of evidence from any reporter to back the charges.

It particularly bothers me that normally responsible Republican voices like Paul Gigot, Peggy Noonan and George Will are so quick to lend credence to the idea that Gore is "stealing" the election. Finding more real votes in a recount is not stealing; inventing votes that never were is. It is important to remember the distinction.

BTW, Broward county has reported that Gore picked up only 50 votes after one-third of the recount was done. If the Dems are stealing votes, they are not doing a very good job of it. Could it be that the recounts are proceeding in a lawful manner after all?
