I like that last sentence the best - "a guess at 5 year growth". Historical data tells as that the 'average' analyst growth prediction for the 5 year period scores better than their 12 month prediction.

I do not expect any 5 year projection to be accurate, but since according to some sources 5 years should be a minimum investment, I'll run the numbers.
This will work better for me than looking at historical references - I hope. Mike's Siebel future valuation post helped me a great deal in looking at the long term.

The question remains how much those will be adjusted in the current interest rate and growth environments. Obviously, we've been seeing some adjustment.

It's not a walk in the park. I've been watching Japan Bubble films just to make me feel better. But the question many of us are asking about valuation, should be asked just as much on the upside as on the downside.

I own several of the top players in my 'basket' excluding Nortel and Lucent. I don't own those two because according to the research reports I study, market share is being built in favor of the newer niche players that have the 'best of breed' technology/software combination.

I hold RBAK and CIEN and I am comfortable with them. SCMR came out of the gate too expensive for me but is much cheaper now. Corvis and ONI Systems I do know too much about. Lucent(Western Electric) and Nortel have a lot of baggage. I do not own Nortel but they do have one of the best groups of engineers and apparently the startups agree.

Thanks for your help, and answering my question.
