Another post I read somewhere:

Hi! I have been studying the two main types of public exchanges - namely the
ones who focus on the discovery phase of a transaction, and the other, who
focus on transactivity fulfillment. Obviously, both these types of net
markets have different revenue models and are both successful in varying
degrees.
I would like to invite a discussion from the forum on what type of a
net-market will eventually succeed?

My views are that although focusing on the discovery phase is a good way to
begin customer acquisitions, ultimately, only genuine end-to-end
transactivity will help realization of the benefits of the internet economy.
The forces of dynamic pricing as well as enhanced discovery together,
according to me, is the right recipe.

Also, I would like a list of successful B2B e-marketplaces, who focus on the
discovery phase.

Thanks.
