We chose based on our personal interests- we can SAY that our interests our lofty, and noble and pure- but that don't make it so, especially not ot the guy on the other side of the fence.


I've heard you say this a number of times. Not sure I agree. If what you're saying is that my acting in my self interest is not inherently more worthy than the other guy acting in his self interest, I do agree.

But I think some interests are inherently more lofty than others. I think long-term self interest, for example, is more lofty than short term. If I resist the urge to eat the seed corn, but plant it instead, I think that is more worthy. Likewise, I think sub-optimizing my self interest at the expense of the community is downright immoral, for example, hoarding in times of shortage. If you were suggesting that all interests are equal, I disagree.

It's cold and dreary out and I'm feeling philosophic...
