substancep, from what i've read on HGSI, they've been working on finding proteins that have to do with diseases since the early 90s. They can't possibly make all the drugs that they've received or going to received patents on. Therefor, they give the crappier patents to other companies and just get pure royalties. HGSI plans to have it's first drug out by 2002 or 2003. These drugs should have a high probability of getting approved by the FAA or whatever organization approves drugs b/c HGSI's drugs are natural substances found in the human body.

You are correct in saying that i'm not familiar with the pharmaceutical industry (learning..havn't really started major research on biotech yet), but from what i've read on HGSI, they will produce drugs and are currently working on a few right now.

Anyone who sells a drug that uses one of HGSI's possible 7,700 patents will pay royalties." is a big stretch.

Well, the management at HGSI doesn't think so and they think they deserve every cent. I'm not saying it's a 100% certain thing HGSI will become a monster of a company. Just saying they seem to have a whole lot of potential. Just like investing in QCOM in 1995 in hope that CDMA would rule 3G. I have no investment in HGSI and i'm not trying to hype this stock. They just seem pretty interesting. I, personally, couldn't make a investment in HGSI. The stock is too high and doesn't fit my criteria, although, i make exceptions.

founded in 1992, is a pioneer in the use of genomics, the study of all human genes, and the development of new pharmaceutical products. We are a leader in moving these genomics-based drugs into patient-based clinical trials. In 1999, three HGS drugs were tested in patients. Our goal is to become a global biopharmaceutical company that discovers, develops, manufactures and sells our own genomics-based drugs.

The mission of Human Genome Sciences is to treat and cure disease by bringing new gene-based medicines to patients around the world. We are dedicated to discovery for health.

We believe that our genomics-based drugs will usher in a new generation of healthcare products. Our medicines will use the human body’s natural substances—genes, proteins, and antibodies—to repair, rebuild and restore to normal health damaged, diseased and aged tissues.
