Legerity Leverages Aware's ADSL Technology for Next-Generation Data + Voice Chipsets Legerity and Aware Join Forces to Develop Hardware and Software Technologies That Integrate Full-Rate ADSL and Carrier-Class Voice Services
AUSTIN, Texas--Nov. 20, 2000-- Legerity, Inc., a leading communication integrated circuit (IC) provider for data and voice networks, today announced that it has licensed ADSL intellectual property from Aware, Inc., (Nasdaq:AWRE - news), a worldwide leader in DSL technology for high-speed Internet access. As part of the licensing agreement, Legerity is partnering with Aware to accelerate development of new enabling technologies for next-generation Legerity chipsets that will support simultaneous full-rate ADSL and POTS voice transmissions over existing telephone lines.
Under the licensing agreement, Aware is providing Legerity with standard-compliant G.992.2 G.lite and G.992.1 G.dmt full-rate ADSL technology and software. Aware's full-rate ADSL technology delivers data transmission speeds of more than 10 Mbps downstream and up to 800 Kbps upstream. Aware technology, licensed by Legerity, includes patented intellectual property, system design expertise, run-time software, and ASIC cores. Legerity is leveraging and enhancing this Aware technology to develop the data path for an integrated data + voice chipset solution planned for introduction in 2001. The forthcoming Legerity chipset solution is designed to revolutionize deployment of multi-port, voice-enabled, full-rate ADSL linecards in central offices (COs), digital loop carriers (DLCs), and digital subscriber line access multiplexors (DSLAMs).
``Legerity's groundbreaking technology for integrated, high-speed data and voice networks will enable a new generation of communications equipment suppliers to seamlessly support 'plain old telephone service,' voice over DSL, and full-rate ADSL from one multiport linecard based on forthcoming Legerity chipsets,'' said Russ Apfel, Legerity's chief technology officer. ``Legerity's collaborative design work with Aware is key to developing the high-performance data path of our integrated data and voice technology.''
``Today's central office and DLC chipsets must meet a growing set of voice over broadband requirements, in addition to lower power, reduced cost, and higher port density,'' said Michael Tzannes, CEO of Aware. ``Service providers and communications equipment manufacturers are demanding highly flexible, multiport chipsets that can support multiple voice and data services from a single linecard. We believe Legerity's next-generation, integrated data and voice chipset solution will be well positioned to provide these value-added functions.''
Aware technology complements Legerity's expertise in systems architecture; mixed-signal, analog and DSP design; and high-voltage bipolar circuit design. Legerity also offers proprietary, high-voltage, wide-bandwidth process technology to enable chipset-level integration of data and voice services, as well as integration of the splitter function traditionally handled by a separate POTS splitter in the network. Legerity's extensive portfolio of intellectual property includes more than 600 silicon and system-level patents developed during the company's more than 20 years in the communication industry. Legerity pioneered the use of DSPs in codec/filters and invented the Ringing SLIC, an IC innovation that has set a standard in reducing the cost and complexity of voice networks.
