One difference between their bubble and ours is that the individual shareholder typically got screwed there, while many individuals have done very well in the US.

I think the key words here are "have done"...

many individuals have done very well.... I don't think they will do very well going forward. I think the nasdaq will be testing the 1000-1500 area next year. I think the DOW and S&P will be cut in half over the next 2-3 years. With a baby boomer population heavily in the market and depending on it for their retirement, this economy and market will be rocked by a prolonged bear market. Through in a global recession and it don't look good for the individual investor over the next ten to twenty years.
