Yahoo Shares Fall 5 Percent on Ruling

Nov 20 11:35am ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Shares of U.S. Internet giant Yahoo Inc. (YHOO.O) fell sharply on Monday after a French court ordered the company to bar French users from sites selling Nazi memorabilia.

Yahoo shares were off $2-3/4, or 5.4 percent, at $48-1/2 in late-morning trade on the Nasdaq stock market, near their 52-week low of $45-1/16. The stock's 52-week high is $250-1/16.

Under the court ruling, Yahoo must prevent French users from visiting English-language auction sites where Nazi books, weapons, SS badges and uniforms are offered for sale.

The ruling could have major implications for Internet retailers such as Amazon.com (AMZN.O) and other online auctioneers such as eBay (EBAY.O).

Yahoo has three months to implement the ruling or face fines. Although its French portal does not host auctions of Nazi memorabilia, French Web users can easily click over to Yahoo.com's English-language services, where such auctions are available.

Yahoo had fought the case on the grounds that its Yahoo.com services are U.S.-governed and that auctions of Nazi material cannot be barred because of the right to free speech guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.

That argument stinks. All over Europe the possession and the use of Nazi symbols is forbidden and strictly prosecuted.
