Cooters,

<< Sprint PCS does today have more than adequate spectrum. That is not reflected in the press. >>

Sprint has more than adequate spectrum for today but they will go for more. They were after all the most successful bidder in C block as WirelessCo and have made good affiliations.

They hurt a bit on coverage (licensed POPS). Oliver Valente did a great job with the original buildout, and is now doing a great job with data implementation.

I use Verizon (formerly BAM) because of nationwide coverage for business travel It has no peer, and Sprint PCS is comparatively weak in the NorthEast corridor where I reside and do 50% of my business travel. The difference is AMPS and BAM & Nynexes old RBOC buildout.

AMPS is a very mixed blessing, but a great fallback.

BAM's buildout and relo issues were simpler than Sprints in the NE
.
Difficulty for Verizon is that they are patching 3 networks and other acquisition's together, have an AMPS heritage they won't completely eliminate till 2003, and operate in 2 chunks of spectrum. Life is not as simple as Sprint PCS's.

AWS is sitting with all sorts of spectrum and licensed POPS that is not built out, and what they have built out is in many cases not well built out and then there their is Is-136 TDMA (Yuk!) as a technology choice.

Cingular is in worst shape. Good coverage but 2 technologies, in 2 chunks of spectrum with the AMPs legacy.

VoiceStream is interesting. Good (potential) coverage with lots of POPs. Redoing a sloppy buildout on the Omnipoint side. Full interoperability and roaming capabilities in 130 countries and Vodafones roaming partner of choice until we get multi-band multi-mode handsets, Downside is that their 3G upgrade path most definitely requires additional spectrum (long before Sprint PCS or Verizon)..

<< My problem is with press coverage of CDMA carriers >>

I think it has been pretty good. Guess we are reading different articles. <g>

<< There is no concrete indication Sprint PCS does not have adequate spectrum for all their future needs >>

Perhaps not, but think 1997 with full multimedia services and wireless replacing landline for many applications. Sprint PCS could well need new spectrum. I think they will. I HOPE they will.
