Stephen, you do not need a special tool to remove BIOS chip. Get a small pointed screwdriver or something and with pliers put a small hook on end. Gently insert tool in opposite corners of Chip, tugging ever so lightly, working all four corners. Note the chip has a corner cut off to tell you how to re-insert it. Get number off chip to order. I dealt with DONNA thru' e-mails for my chip. Came in about 3 days.

These Abit board are TOUGH and will last a while longer. Thinking you can use up to 1MHz chip with updated BIOS on this board. There are two versions, Early 1.0x, and latest BH6 ver. 1.1. The BIOS chip is not interchangeable tho'.

Good luck. /jw

Not to say this will cure problems, at least it will narrow it down and the experience with changing chip should be worth $20. <G>.

Stephen

You may want to check the power supply. It may sound likes it's running , with the sound of the fan. But the actual power supply to the motherboard may be burned out.I've seen this before with one of my backup machines .But as soon as I did a voltage check on the motherboard , I could see that no voltage was being supplied. Your sympton are almost identical to what I was experiencing , especially the blank screen. The sound of the fan, tends to make one not expect anything is wrong with the board .But the voltage supply for the board and fan is seperate and will allow one to continue running when the other one is defective.

Best Regards

Sometimes replacement chips come with a little pry-bar to assist in the replacement. Maybe you'll be lucky with your BIOS.

Cheers, PW.
