While the writing was on the wall for the Soviet Union well before 1989, the liberals in the West-at least through the mid-'70's-so hated private enterprise that they universally believed and constantly stated that the Soviet socialist system was simply "marching to a different drummer" (their favorite phrase, as banal as it may sound). While the collapse of communism has been pretty-well in their face ever since, their hatred for the private sector lives on, and can be seen in Gore, Clinton/Gore, as well as Nader.

These enemies of liberty can only be allowed to prevail for so long before the cause of freedom is permanently damaged. This election would be a good time to deliver them a blow. We shall see.

BTW, We WERE losing the Cold War, and quite badly, before Nixon's strategic move of reapproachment with China. The tide began to turn because of it-one of the reasons that Nixon was singled out by the left as a target...
