( Both side talk about finality but I doubt if they are really interested.)" The briefings didn't address this, so I didn't mention it in my post, nor have I thought that part through. However, I recall one sentence of a briefing (Gore's) which said the federal Constitution would be violated if the Judges ruled blah blah blah - this sent a yellow flag in my mind. (who handles federal Constitution violations?). I get the feeling both sides are ready to take this right up to the top (but aren't there strict rules which prevent State election issues from being decided by the Feds?) Nonetheless, I can see a reasonably clear path for some simple, new laws that can help prevent some of this stuff in the future, even if an election is close. Some States already have them in place. Florida's Statutes just weren't as clean (partially because they just weren't as clean and partially because they were never tested to quite this extent), which is why, at the core of the debate is the argument around the "structure of the statutes" (which is a phrase that sort of means, what is the meaning of the structure of the statutes, or the big picture, when you take these two conflicting statutes and put them together?) RE: "One last thought, in 2002, the party that controls the White House is likely to loose a load of votes in the congress. Maybe in this election it is better to be a looser than the winner!" The winner of this one is going to enable a potential loss for their Party in the congress during the mid-term. So, at this point, if you're a Rep, start cheering for Gore, and if you're a Dem start cheering for Bush. Maybe the bottom-line is this country really isn't split down the middle, but rather there could be a lot of common ground with most folks in the middle. However, I think a point you made up earlier is probably the most significant point, which is: we can't mess this process up, because this is the process that international countries have their faith in us for. However, on a positive note (yes, I'm reaching here), maybe this drill had to be done once, because there were some laws that need to be cleaned up. Regards, Amy J
