e.Digital Reports Successful Showing of Digital Music Product Platforms to OEMs At COMDEX 2000
Business Editors/High-Tech Writers COMDEX Fall 2000
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 20, 2000--e.Digital Corporation (OTC:EDIG) reported that the first consumer version of its MicroOS(TM)-based portable digital music jukebox platform was successfully unveiled at COMDEX 2000 in Las Vegas last week to selected OEMs. The portable jukebox platform holds up to 2,000 songs on an embedded 6.4 GB hard drive and the first consumer product based on the e.Digital platform is currently being marketed by Hy-Tek Inc. under the name "Treo". (See www.treoplayer.com for more information.) e.Digital also held meetings with current and potential OEM customers to demonstrate platforms for its standard MicroOS(TM)-based Internet music players as well as a new music player design featuring the 500 MB optical storage disc from DataPlay. (See e.Digital's Press Release dated October 19, 2000 for further details.) Fred Falk, e.Digital's president and CEO, said, "The response to our platforms was even stronger than we expected. We had the opportunity to meet privately with selected major consumer electronics companies, high-end stereo manufacturers, and PC manufacturers on our portable jukebox platform, portable Internet music player platform, and new DataPlay-enabled music players. "The OEMs we met with realized that our digital jukebox platform has a rich feature set, superb sound quality, and multi-codec support, all in an extremely compact, pocket-size form factor that surpasses competing jukebox-type products shown at COMDEX or on the market today. "Based on the sessions that took place at COMDEX, we expect the jukebox platform to contribute significantly to our business next year. We also believe that products derived from our jukebox platform have the potential of being some of the best-selling consumer electronics products in 2001." Falk added, "We also met with OEMs regarding our MicroOS-based Internet music player design incorporating the DataPlay removable, 500 MB optical disc, and this design was also very well received. For the past several months we have been working closely with DataPlay and a number of OEM customers to also develop MicroOS-based product designs beyond digital music players incorporating this new technology. DataPlay's formal introduction of their optical storage technology will take place in January at CES 2001 (the Consumer Electronics Show) in their 8,000-square-foot Partners Pavilion. We are looking forward to more news and announcements about this new technology and the OEM products incorporating it leading up to and at that show." The company's new portable Internet music player incorporating the DataPlay optical disc holds 3 hours of higher-than-CD quality music or 11 hours of compressed music files, and features multi-codec support. Falk concluded, "Our standard Internet music player platform stood out among many others being shown at COMDEX because of our ability to support multiple codecs, multiple digital rights management systems, and a variety of removable storage media. As the online world continues to develop, OEM customers are expected to launch different versions of this compact portable Internet music player platform to consumer markets in early 2001." One version of e.Digital's standard Internet music player platform is already shipping to the Korean market through licensee Maycom Co. Ltd., Korea, as the "MP2000" under their Merit brand name. Maycom and e.Digital are working together with OEMs to market versions of this product in Europe, Asia, and throughout the world under a variety of brand names. The basic platform features: support for multiple music codecs, including MP3, ePAC, WMA, QDX, and AAC; support for multiple Digital Rights Management systems, including WMA and InterTrust; and can be adapted at the OEM level to incorporate a variety of removable storage cards including CompactFlash, SD Card, MMC, or Microdrive. The platform also features a backlit LCD with support for both English and Japanese characters, and an FM radio mode with four user-selected station presets.
