The Smithsonian Wants Chad — And Other Notes From Florida Monday, November 20, 2000 A sure sign this presidential election will have a special place in history: the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History wants to preserve chads and butterfly ballots. Larry Bird, a curator with the museum, planned to fly to West Palm Beach on Monday to begin gathering items. He's hoping to come home not only with a ballot — but with an entire voting machine. "I don't imagine I'd come out with that immediately," he said. "But I want to be able to talk to some officials there and make plain our interest in collecting one for the museum, and that it be one that was actually used in the election." The museum plans to open a new exhibit Wednesday called "The American Presidency: A Glorious Burden." Curators have made several last-minute changes to reflect the post-election developments.
