D.H. Brown Rates VA Linux Systems as No. 1 in Linux Strategy and Solutions

FREMONT, Calif., Nov 20, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- VA Linux Systems, Inc.
(Nasdaq: LNUX) today announced that D.H. Brown Associates, Inc. (DHBA), a leading
research and consulting firm, has rated VA as No. 1 in overall Linux strategy in
DHBA's recently released multi-client study on "Linux Strategies and Solutions."

In a comparison with Dell, HP, Compaq and IBM, VA Linux Systems was ranked
highest in overall vendor positioning, value added and Linux community
leadership.

The DHBA report recognized VA Linux as a "broad solutions provider" in the
Internet server market, highlighting VA Linux Systems' Build-to-Order Software
Selector (BOSS(TM)) as a feature that "extends customization beyond the
alternatives available from other suppliers."

D.H. Brown also highlighted VA Linux Systems' leadership in founding and
operating the Open Source Development Network (OSDN(TM)), including SourceForge,
the world's largest Open Source development site.

"Larry Augustin and the VA Linux team have developed a business model taking the
best pages from the playbooks of Dell (direct model) and Sun (differentiation
and developer relations) and are driving a wedge between them, solving Internet
infrastructure problems offering value that neither Dell nor Sun has offered to
date," said Pierre Fricke, executive vice president, Open Systems and End User
Programs for D.H. Brown Associates, Inc.

"At VA Linux, we are committed to making our customers successful with Linux and
Open Source solutions by providing them with ongoing access to our expertise,"
said Dr. Larry M. Augustin, president and CEO of VA Linux Systems. "The D.H.
Brown report affirms VA Linux's position, not only as the expert provider of
Internet server solutions, but also as a leader in the Linux and Open Source
software development communities."
