oh, ok... I think we are just viewing this in different time periods as I am looking down the road, not where we are right now.

My thought is that Ariba's b2b procurement platform turned out to be a great entry point to show off the functionality of internet based commerce. The future of b2b ecommerce is going to be very big and Ariba is showcasing what that technology can do, albeit not yet for the holy grail of an integrated 'operating system' for a given industry.

Somebody is going to win big and Ariba is first mover. i2's got similar ambitions but it hasn't produced much in terms of internet based commerce. Nevertheless, i2 listens closely to its customers and is saving big money for customers already so they too should be a big player in all of this.

I see major franchises being built and Ariba's valuation looks pretty reasonable at $15b but you have to assume they leverage their current position into something a lot bigger.
