I think that Besancon's numbers are not
quite right. While it is probably true not more
than 15% of French people attend church regularly,
on a once or twice a year basis, it would probably be
35 to 40%. The key divide is who decides to get their
children baptized and who marries in Church. I think
the number is closer to 50-60%. The remaining 40-45%
are either atheists (not all anti-clerical, since
these attitudes are dying fast, together with the
electorate of th French communist party) or
Moslem (probably 4%), Jewish (about 1%) and Protestant
(0.5%). Of the minority religions, the one most
in danger is protestantism, which has declined very
quickly (for Jews, there remains very strong group
pressures-- somewhat greater than in the US-- to marry
inside the religion).
