Today's biggest news:

That Intel has made this a stealth launch. The irony- after all the paper launches the P4 gets a stealth launch. There can only be one conclusion: Intel marketing wants it that way.

Duh- But why do they want that? I'm convinced that Intel marketing is terrified that the P4 will put the P3 out of business. Two weeks in a row SSB reported AMD "sweet spot" (1GHz and 900MHz) chip prices had increased. This must mean that consumers are unexpectedly demanding higher speed chips.

The bottom line is that here is the potential for Intel to get whacked in Q1 by a high speed Duron onslaught. I think that shorting Intel might be a better investment (or at least hedge) compared to buying AMD. Intel just doesn't have any upside, while the downside is huge. How will Intel deal with 900MHz Durons?

<Jim: When P6 came along, Intel had the Classic Pentium as the fastest chip to carry them. Everyone else was back in 486s.>

You could even say that the situation is extremely reminiscent of the P5 intro. When Intel launched the P5, AMD's 486 was smaller, cheaper, faster. For "legacy" code, anyway.
